Meet Katie Padilla: Founder of Bloom Family Law

Many people experiencing divorce are forced to accept it as the worst time of their lives and an expensive and toxic trip to court. They are not seen. They are not heard. They are not supported. They wind up overwhelmed as they try to go it alone, or they end up with attorneys who charge too much, listen too little, and advise their clients from a fear-based approach.

My practice aims to change that.

Revolutionizing How Families Navigate Their Most Challenging Moments

Not just a fierce advocate with extensive knowledge, when clients work with me, they quickly discover they are also getting an empathetic, compassionate person who thinks about them as a whole person (as opposed to just an entity) and also considers all people involved. Formally trained as a coach and meditation teacher, I employ these modalities with my clients to help support personal empowerment.

Not just an ending, divorce is a beginning. It's a powerful time when someone states what they want and takes action. It's a transformative process that follows the stages of grieving and can lead to increased self-awareness and intense healing. I liken the divorce process to Persephone's underworld descent and eventual return, allowing clients to emerge into the springtime of living their lives from their authentic values that they have uncovered in this process. This is your time to meet yourself deeply.

Not just a lawyer, my clients find a collaboratively trained professional who fights for them without having to face off in family court, where judges are burnt out, opposing counsel is adversarial, and the justice they seek can become the unwitting catalyst of collateral damage. As a Certified Family Law Specialist designated by the State Bar of California (a designation requiring extensive training and proven experience litigating complex family law matters), my deep understanding of family court dynamics led to a powerful realization: the most meaningful legal support often happens outside traditional courtroom settings. Years of litigation have shown me the impact divorce has on future generations and how our children internalize the conflict that they see. I aim to make this the compass of my practice.

The Expert and the Awakened Student

Clients expect an expert when they hire me. They also get a professional who is continually improving through participation in my own therapeutic and personal development practices. This study includes small group women's work, individual therapy, regular meditation, coaching, and continued learning.

This work has given me tools that have helped me navigate my way out of my own darkness that has surfaced in my life over the years. These tools have also allowed me to intentionally employ that darkness and suffering as my biggest teachers, a practice that has helped me achieve seemingly insurmountable goals in my past. My practice focuses on reframing difficulty as our master teacher that is ready to provide wisdom to us in the form of challenging events. This is all happening for you, not to you, and your darkness will subside and be replaced with your own pearls of wisdom. That is something to celebrate!

I pass on these tools to my clients because I strongly believe that it is not enough to just receive legal representation during divorce. Every person deserves to gain a sense of safety, confidence, and understanding in this process. It's all been here, a quiet presence, patiently holding space for you. This is your season to recalibrate, so you can shine exactly as you were meant to.

Your Invitation to Take Care of Yourself

Your divorce can be the initiation to your awakening process. Awakening is so much easier in a select, intentional, and supportive community. I show clients how to discern which energy to avoid and which to embrace because all energy is contagious. My energy as an attorney is contagious to every client. Their ex's attorney's energy is also contagious to their ex. The energy of court and judgment will impact and color the entire experience. This should all be considered with deference at the outset of any family law proceeding. You can be intentional, even in a sea of change.

While I do focus on radical acceptance, both of ourselves and others we are intimately connected to, I also encourage clients to recognize this difficult time as an opportunity to decide which people can and are willing to be 100% supportive. Through interpersonal relationship dynamics based on the work of Harriet Lerner, I help coach clients to begin practicing boundaries with those who drain their energy, "reseating" them to the back of your audience rather than the front row.

It's critical to surround yourself with those whose energy will instill confidence and reassurance that you WILL make it through. Protecting yourself from those who regularly engage in limiting beliefs is essential during this time. Your perceived sense of safety is critical when you are already going through such a big transition.

This approach is taken from the proverbial tale of the oak sapling that must be protected from the trampling of the cows in the field, as this tree will one day grow to provide the shade and respite for the cows on hot days. Until that oak grows big and strong, it requires protection. Your journey deserves protection.

In learning to protect themselves, clients can better protect the emotional and mental well-being of their families during this time. I've even had clients tell me that working with me sometimes allowed them to forget that they were going through a difficult divorce, which is at the heart of my work.
